An interactive two-day nutrition awareness drive was conducted for middle and secondary school students (Standards 6 to 9) across three institutions — Kurumathur GVHSS, Parassinikkadavu Government High School and St. Mary's School, Kuzhichal — on 8 and 9 August 2026, to mark International Nutrition Day. The series aimed to build lifelong healthy eating habits by introducing practical nutritional principles, portion control, hydration habits and the importance of limiting ultra-processed junk food.

Central Theme: "പോഷകാഹാരം – എന്റെ ഹെൽത്തി പ്ലേറ്റ്" (Nutrition – My Healthy Plate)

The sessions followed an engaging, student-centred Malayalam curriculum tailored for Standards 6 to 9. Resource persons led active discussions, connecting everyday food choices with growth, energy and cognitive performance.

Ice-Breaking & Engagement

Students discussed their common food preferences, contrasting popular ultra-processed foods (pizzas, burgers, chocolates, ice creams) with nutrient-dense home-cooked meals. The sessions emphasised that tasty food must also be nutritious.

Understanding Essential Food Groups

Energy-Giving Foods: Rice, chapati and dosa for daily vitality and active routines.
Growth & Muscle Repair: Protein sources such as eggs, pulses, lentils, legumes, milk and curd.
Immunity & Protection: Vegetables and fruits providing vital vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre.
Hydration: Clean water as a fundamental daily essential for bodily functions.

The "Healthy Plate" & "Rainbow Diet" Concept

Students learned visual portioning using a standard plate template — half fruits and vegetables, a quarter energy grains and a quarter protein. The slogan "More colours on the plate, more variety in the diet!" encouraged them to eat green, red, yellow and orange produce.

Managing Junk Food & Moderation

Students were guided to limit chips, soft drinks and processed snacks, and were introduced to nutrient-packed alternatives such as fresh whole fruits, nuts, boiled eggs and homemade snacks.

Conclusion

The International Nutrition Day Awareness Drive equipped students of Standards 6 to 9 at Kurumathur GVHSS, Parassinikkadavu Government High School and St. Mary's School, Kuzhichal with practical tools to evaluate their meal habits. By encouraging students to reflect on their daily plate, the sessions laid a strong foundation for healthy lifestyles and dietary awareness.
